Nine different programs use the .pls file extension, but four of the ten can be grouped together. Those four are Shoutcast, Napster, Real MP3, and WinAmp. These programs are media players which use the .pls extension for play lists. Since this is a generic format it is not confined to these four programs. iTunes, XMPlay, VLC Media Player, and Foobar all have support for the .pls format as well. Similar to an .m3u play list, the .pls stores (caches) information on song title, artist name, album, and length of song. When a user loads a pre-saved play list, this information is immediately displayed in the player's information window where it can be reviewed.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.
David G.
My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

The data in the .pls file is text only, structured similar to an .ini file. It contains the header (identifies it as a .pls file), the track entry (all the information about the individual songs), and the footer (displaying the version number of the play list). Many programs (there are far too many to list here) exist that will allow editing of the tags in the file, but the files can be opened and edited using a standard text editor. If choosing this method, users are cautioned to edit only song titles, album names, or artists. The rest of data needs to remain intact for the media player to properly locate and play the file.

More Info Regarding File Extension Pls
Though errors are uncommon with these files the biggest issue with them is in relation to Microsoft Windows. The Windows operating system and its default software do not recognize the .pls extension and will not utilize it. Windows Media Player will only use the .pls if the K-Lite codec is installed. Even then WMP will not recognize .pls play lists automatically. They will have to be manually loaded to work properly. Users can convert their .pls files to .m3u format using Sprintbit Playlist Manager.
PicoLog is a data acquisition software package that allows for collecting, analyzing, and displaying large amounts of raw data. Collection of the data can be through weather instruments, Oscilloscope products, or just about any other type of measuring device compatible with the computer. The software uses the .pls extension for files that store the capture settings data. Recoder.pls stores information about the current recording session, while player.pls contains information about the current player session. This file format is proprietary to PicoLog and the files cannot be utilized by other software packages.
Another association of the .pls extension belongs to the MYOB family of business accounting software. The company offers five different packages for Windows and Mac designed to make administrative takes easy and efficient. Exactly what the MYOB .pls file contains is not clear as the software uses several different extensions. What is known is that these are data files that are encrypted and password protected. Many commercial password recovery programs have .pls support, but it is assumed the MYOB software is still necessary to access the data.
A fourth association links the .pls extension to Pro/Engineer, a 3D CAD/CAM/CAE suite from PTC. It is reported that these files are temporary files uses by the software during project creation. They should not be usable outside the Pro/Engineer software, nor should they be necessary to keep once a project is complete. No other information on these files could be found.
The remaining associations have been reported from as far back as 2003, with no further details being known. These three associations are: a DisorderTracker2 sample, a name and address file for the WinPAS Plus32 application, a MattBatt iAM-Player file. It appears that all three programs have been out of production for at least a few years. No other information is currently available.
